Daily GK Update 3rd - January - 2015

Jiji Thomson to be Kerala chief secretary
(i) Sports Authority of India (SAI) director general Jiji Thomson is set to become the next chief secretary of Kerala.
(ii) The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has approved premature repatriation of Thomson to his cadre state Kerala, said an order issued in this regard. 
(iii) he will leave for his home state next week to take charge.
(iv) Thomson, a 1980 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, will take over from present incumbent, EK Bharat Bhushan, who will retire on January 31.

Former ISRO Chairman V R Gowarikar died in Pune
(i) Senior Scientist and former Chairman of ISRO Vasant Ranchhod Gowarikar died after a brief illness in Pune, India on 2 January 2015. He was 82. 
(ii) Chiefly known as the Father of the Indian Monsoon Model, Gowarikar was the first scientist to develop first indigenous weather forecasting model that predicted monsoon correctly. 
(iii) Between 1991 and 1993, he served as Scientific Advisor to late Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao.

10 crore Jan Dhan accounts, 73% zero balance
(i) The government on Friday said that banks had gone past the target of opening 10 crore Jan Dhan accounts and had managed to cover 98% of the households, prompting to now launch a "challenge" to find out if any family remained without access to basic banking facility.
(ii) In recent weeks, there has also been a significant increase in the funds deposited in the Jan Dhan accounts with the corpus in the 10.36 crore accounts going past Rs 8,000 crore, according to data available with the finance ministry. 
(iii) But 7.6 crore accountholders, which is around 73% of all Jan Dhan accounts, had zero balance on December 30.

Niti Aayog likely to start functioning next week
(i) Within hours of the government announcing a new body to replace Planning Commission, the Yojana Bhawan staff began hectic preparations to welcome new vice-chairman of Niti Aayog and other members who are likely to be appointed shortly. 
(ii) The landmark sign board in front of Yojana Bhawan has been repainted as Niti Aayog and rooms to seat the senior functionaries are being decked up. 
(iii) Noted economist, Arvind Panagariya is tipped to be the first vice-chairman of the Niti Aayog. 

RBI Eases Know-Your-Customers Norms for NBFCs
(i) Amending rules for NBFCs with regard to their KYC exercise, the Reserve Bank today relaxed the time limit during which such due diligence is required.
(ii) The rules have been eased due to practical difficulties and constraints in getting Know-Your-Customers (KYC) documents at frequent intervals.
(iii) "Full KYC exercise will be required to be done at least every 2 years for high risk individuals and entities.

Kumar Sangakkara: Sri Lanka batsman becomes quickest to 12,000 Test runs
(i) Sangakkara achieved the feat in his 224th innings, during Sri Lanka’s second Test with New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday.
(ii) India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s Ricky Ponting took 247 knocks to pass the 12,000 mark, a milestone also reached by South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and India’s Rahul Dravid.
(iii) Sangakkara has notched 37 hundreds and 51 fifties in his 130 Tests to date at an average of 58.38, with a highest score of 319 against Bangladesh in Chittagong earlier this year

Over 20,000 people contracted Ebola in 2014: WHO
(i) The number of people infected with the deadly Ebola virus reached 20,381 people by the end of 2014, and 7,989 of them died of the disease, according to figures released on Friday by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
(ii) The data includes confirmed, suspected and probable cases recorded in Guinea Conakry and Sierra Leone until Dec 31 and in Liberia until December 28.
(iii) The country most severely affected by the epidemic is Sierra Leone, where 9,633 infections and 2,827 deaths have been reported, followed by Liberia with 8,018 infections and 3,423 deaths.

West Bengal to woo investors at summit
(i) The State is organising Global Business Summit on January 7 and 8 Projecting itself as an ideal investment destination.
(ii) The Government of West Bengal is organising Bengal Global Business Summit — Bengal Leads 2015 — on January 7 and 8 to attract investment from foreign and domestic companies.
(iii) Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari are expected to attend. 
(iv) Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee will speak on the occasion besides interacting with investors.

Ravindra Jadeja may miss out on India squad for the 2015 World Cup
(i) India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja may miss out on the squad for the 2015 World Cup, to be announced on January 6.
(ii) Jadeja suffered a shoulder injury during the ongoing Australia-India Test series which may keep him out of action for a long time.
(iii) The 26-year old, who has been nursing his injury in Chennai, has not yet reached the expected mark to return to competitive cricket.

Court orders public notice on plea to wind up UBHL
(i) In a major set back to UB (Holdings) Ltd. (UBHL), the Karnataka High Court, on Friday, ordered issuance of public notices on pleas of three foreign firms, a consortium of Indian banks and an oil company for winding up of UBHL for its failure to pay dues as per the corporate guarantee given by it on behalf of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. (KAL).
(ii) Justice A. S. Bopanna passed the order while admitting petitions filed by Switzerland-based IAE International Aero Engines, England-based Rolls Royce and Partners Finance Ltd. and RRP Engine Leasing Ltd., consortium of banks led by State Bank of India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL). 
(iii) The public notices in newspapers will have to be issued in the first week of February.

Discrimination against Dalits in giving Bharat Ratna: Mayawati
(i) Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday charged the NDA government with discriminating against Dalit icons like Kanshi Ram while awarding Bharat Ratna to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malviya.
(ii) She also attacked the Narendra Modi government for adopting the “ordinance route” on key issues.

Saina disappointed by Padma Award snub
(i) Olympic bronze-medallist Saina Nehwal has been left disappointed after the Sports Ministry decided to reject her application for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award this year, citing norms.
(ii) Badminton Association of India (BAI) had recommended Saina’s name for the award to the Sports Ministry in August last year but the ministry picked two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar as it felt he was a more deserving candidate.
(iii) The ministry guidelines say that there needs to be a gap of five years between two Padma awards. 
(iv) So if they can send his name, why they didn’t recommend my name as I have completed the five years gap. I felt bad about it,” Saina, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010, told PTI.

New U.S. Ambassador Richard Verma arrives in Delhi

(i) The new U.S. Ambassador, Richard Rahul Verma, arrived in Delhi on Friday. He is the first ever Indian-American to be appointed the U.S. envoy to India.
(ii) Mr. Verma will continue the embassy’s work in advancing the U.S.-India strategic partnership, said a communiqué from the mission.
(iii) “I am honoured to serve as U.S. Ambassador to India at such an exciting time in our bilateral relationship,” he was quoted as saying.
(iv) “I look forward to meeting the Indian people and working together with the Indian government on our shared goals of security, development and prosperity,” Mr. Verma said.

Bank strike on January 7
(i) Bank employees’ unions have decided go on a strike on January 7 across the country to press for a wage hike. 
(ii) Bank unions have also threatened to go on strike on multiple days later this month if their demand is not accepted.
 (iii) “We want early conclusion of the 10th bipartite wage negotiation (with IBA) for satisfactory and reasonable wage hike and so we are going on an all-India bank strike on January 7,” United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) convener Vishwas Utagi told presspersons here on Thursday. 
(iv) The unions have been demanding a wage revision linked to the gross profit of the banks.

Expert panel under CVC to be formed
(i) The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has invited applications for constitution of a committee of experts to scrutinise requests from ministries and departments for reconsideration of their advice on proposals for prosecution sanction against officers facing corruption charges. 
(ii) Persons fulfilling eligibility conditions have been asked to submit applications by January 19.
The CVC is mandated to tender advice in respect of officers in cases where investigating agencies seek sanction for their prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act. 
(iv) Sometimes, the department/ministry concerned refers the cases back to the CVC for reconsideration.

Bezbaruah committee recommendations will be implemented within 6 months: Rajnath Singh
(i) Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government has approved the recommendations made by the Bezbaruah committee which will be implemented in the next 6 months. 
(ii) He also said that a North East Special unit of police has been activated in Delhi to address problems of people from the North East.
(iii) Rajnath Singh also said they are planning to incorporate new sections in the Indian Penal Code to put an end to hate crimes. 
(iv) This committee was set up after the killing of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania in a Delhi market.

Brazil's Dilma Rousseff sworn in for 2nd presidential term

(i) Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff began her second term Thursday vowing to rein in government spending to curb inflation and pull Latin America's largest economy out of a four-year slump.
(ii) As she took the oath of office in Brasilia, Rousseff also promised to embark on an anti-corruption crusade in response to a multi-billion-dollar graft scandal engulfing state-run oil company Petrobras that threatens to haunt her second term.
(iii) Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, has promised to rein in government spending to curb inflation and pull Latin America's largest economy out of a four-year slump.

Stephen Marandi sworn-in as Pro-tem Speaker
(i) Ranchi, JMM MLA Stephen Marandi was on Friday sworn-in as the Pro-tem Speaker of Jharkhand Assembly.
(ii) He was administered the oath by Governor Syed Ahmed at the Raj Bhavan here.
(iii) Chief Minister Raghubar Das, Parliamentary Affairs Minister C P Singh, former Chief Minister Hemant Soren and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Kerala set for National Games; countdown begins
(i) Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 2 (PTI) With just three weeks left for the start of the 35th edition of National Games here, preparations are in full swing with the state government formally launching the official countdown of the multi-sporting event.
(ii) As a prelude to the fortnight-long sporting gala, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 31, a series of promotional programmes including 'Run Kerala Run' marathon and a torch rally will be held in the coming days.

ISRO’s Mangalyaan Completes 100 Days In Martian Orbit
(i) Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO's) Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) aka Mangalyaan, which had successfully entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, has today completed 100 days around the Red planet. Let's take a look how these 100 days had been for the Mangalyaan in the space.
(ii) On November 5, 2013, the mission was launched by the state-run space agency on board its PSLV C25 from Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

Administrative failure behind Naxalism: Jharkhand CM

(i) Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Friday attributed “administrative failure” as a major cause behind Naxalism and assured to provide development-oriented schemes and good governance in the state.
(ii) Addressing his maiden press conference as Chief Minister here on Friday, Mr. Das said it was really unfortunate that even after over six decades of Independence, the poor villagers were deprived of basic amenities including water, road, electricity etc.
(iii) There is no doctor, no teacher, villagers are deprived of basic amenities like road, electricity and water, he said, adding that these are the reasons for increase in Naxal activities.

Radhakrishnan retires as ISRO chief, Shailesh Nayak in charge
(i) Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Radhakrishnan retired on Wednesday. 
(iiShailesh Nayak, who is Secretary, Union Earth Sciences Ministry, will hold additional and interim charge as Chairman for a month or until a regular chief is named, said an order by the Secretary, Appointments’ Committee of the Union Cabinet.
(iii) Dr. Radhakrishnan led ISRO in many achievements over the past five years after he took over the reins in November 2009. 
(iv) The historic Mars Orbiter Mission was launched and guided to an orbit around the red planet under his leadership. 

Mittal appointed Railway Board Chairman
(i) Ending the suspense over filling senior posts, the Railways on Wednesday made a record 11 appointments, including Chairman of Railway Board and eight General Managers.
(ii) A.K. Mittal was appointed as the new Chairman of Railway Board succeeding Arunendra Kumar, who superannuated on December 31.
(iii) Mr. Mittal, the senior-most official, was earlier Member Staff in the Railway Board.
(iv) Pradeep Kumar, who was General Manager of the North Central Railway holding additional charge of Northern Railway, has become new Member Staff succeeding Mr. Mittal.

Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo dead at 82
(i) Mario Cuomo, the three-time Democratic governor of New York who turned down several invitations to seek the U.S. presidency, has died at the age of 82.
(ii) The precise circumstances of his death, which came on the day that his son, Andrew Cuomo, delivered inaugural speeches in Manhattan and Buffalo for his own second term as governor, were not clear.
(iii) There was no immediate official statement announcing his death, but numerous news organizations reported he had died, citing family sources as having confirmed his passing, and several New York politicians issued statements of condolences.

Five Indians added to pro coaches pool
(i) Dutch international Wim Kovermans, a renowned UEFA Pro Licence Instructor and ex-India coach, cleared five Indians at the professional coaches pool of the Asian Football Confederation Pro Diploma coaching course.
(ii) Former internationals Santosh Kashyap, Khalid Jamil and Churchill Brothers head coach Mariano Dias are the three new faces in the list of Professional Coaching Diploma holders, along with Hilal Parray and Thangboi Singto.
(iii) Stanley Rozario got a Pro-Pass (he has to appear for one more practical exam). The course was conducted for the first time ever from July 2013-November 2014 by Kovermans (member of Netherlands 1988 Euro champion team) for 12 participants.

Five new countries join UNSC as non permanent members
(i) Five new countries on Thursday joined the U.N. Security Council as non-permanent members, while Chile assumed the rotating presidency for January.
(ii) With the start of a new year, five new countries — Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Venezuela and Spain — have begun their two-year term, replacing Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, South Korea and Rwanda, Xinhua reported.
(iii) Octavio Errazuriz, permanent representative of Chile to the U.N., took over the rotating council presidency from Cherif Mahamat Zene, the Chadian U.N. ambassador who held the council presidency for December 2014.

Kim Jong Un open to summit with South
(i) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in a nationally televised New Year’s Day speech, said he is open to a summit with his South Korean counterpart.
(ii) Mr. Kim said he sees no reason why there should not be a summit with South Korean President Park Geun-hye or high-level talks if Seoul sincerely wants better ties. 
(iii) He also said his country will strengthen its military and economy.
