Notable Urdu poet Bashar Navaaz passes away
(i) Notable Urdu poet, critic and orator Bashar Navaaz passed away in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He was 80 years old.
(ii) He was known as an Indo Pak shayar as his gazals are popular in India as well as Pakistan.
(iii) He was honored with Galib award of Galib Academy New Delhi, Maharashtra State Urdu Academy award, Iftekhaar E Adab award, Pulotsav Samman for his contribution to Urdu literature.
(i) India and United States have signed inter-governmental agreement to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).
(ii) It was signed by Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das and US Ambassador to India Richard Verma in New Delhi.
(iii) Under the provisions of FATCA, it is mandatory for all financial institutions outside of the US to periodically transmit information on financial accounts held by US citizens to its US Internal Revenue Service.
(iv) If they failed to do so they will face a 30 percent withholding tax on payments made from the US.
Bandhan Bank appointed its Chairman, Boards of Directors
(i) Bandhan Bank Ltd on 9 July 2015 appointed its Chairman and Board of Directors. The bank will commence its operations in India from 23 August 2015.
(ii) It will be the first bank to be established in Eastern India post Independence.
(iii) Ashok Kumar Lahiri, former Chief Economic Adviser to the Union Government, was appointed as the Chairman of the bank.
(iv) While, Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Founder of Bandhan Financial Services Ltd, was appointed as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank.
(v) They both will be in the board of directors as well.
Indian athletes win more than 150 medals at World Police & Fire Games
(i) Indian athletes put up an impressive show at the 2015 World Police & Fire Games which concluded here on Sunday, winning more than 150 medals.
(ii) Hosts United States won by far the most medals, 1,777, including nearly 700 golds. Canada finished second with nearly 430 medals.
(iii) The Indian athletes’s tally included 89 golds and 50 silvers. They competed in only seven sporting categories: athletics, wrestling, boxing, judo, archery, swimming and shooting.
(iv) Kaur, an assistant sub inspector with Punjab Police, earned 5 gold medals in the track and field events, winning every event she competed in.
(v) CRPF’s Mishra, who was taking part in her fifth Police & Fire Games, won an impressive 6 golds and 2 silvers in swimming events.
Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka sets record for spending longest time in space
(i) Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka has set a Guinness World Record for spending longest time in space with a total of 804 days as on July 2015.
(ii) With this he broke the previous record of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes set by Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev (now retired) across six missions from 1998 to 2005.
(iii) Padalka is going to return to Earth in September 2015. When he will return to Earth, he would have spent record total 877 days or around 2.5 years in space.
(iv) Indian-American astronaut Sunita William holds the world records for most spacewalk time for a woman astronaut (50 hours, 40 minutes) and most spacewalks by a woman astronaut (seven times).
