Daily GK Update - 19 - November - 2014

1. World Bank approves $285 million to fight Ebola
i.) The World Bank has approved a grant of $285 million to finance the three west African
countries hardest hit by the Ebola crisis.The grant is part of the nearly $1 billion of financing previously announced by the World Bank for Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, reports Xinhua.
ii.) The additional financing will enable the three countries to deploy additional national and international health workers, scale up community-based care and community engagement for early detection of suspected Ebola cases, the World Bank in a statement on Tuesday.
iii.) A previous World Bank analysis showed that if Ebola continues to surge in these three countries and spreads to neighbouring countries, the two-year regional financial impact would reach $32.6 billion by the end of 2015.

2. LS should pass women's quota bill, says Najma
i.) Union Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptuallh on Wednesday said the Lok Sabha should pass the Women's Reservation Bill that seeks 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and States Legislative Assemblies.
ii.) "Earlier I was not in favour of reservation, but then I saw that women have no voice. There has to be a level playing field for women. Rajya Sabha has passed it and now it is the turn of Lok Sabha to pass it too," she said speaking at a function where she released a report on the the status of girl child in India-- the ’World of India’s Girls (WINGS) 2014’'.
iii.) Referring to the steps being taken by her Ministry for empowerment of women and girls, she said, 33 per cent of all scholarships provided by the Minority Affairs Ministry have now been compulsorily reserved for women.

3. India extends $75 million credit line to Fiji
i.) India on Wednesday announced a $75 million line of credit to Fiji for a co-generation
power plant and a $5 million fund to develop its villages even as the two countries agreed to expand their defence and security cooperation.
ii.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced a visa-on-arrival for Fijians and assistance projects that included a Parliament library and doubling the scholarships and training slots in India for people from Fiji.
iii.) The lines of credit were part of three agreements signed between the two countries in the presence of the two leaders.
iv.) The Pacific Island nation rolled out a red carpet for Mr. Modi, who was received by his counterpart Frank Bainimarama, at the Suva International airport.

4. ISRO chosen for Indira Gandhi prize for peace, disarmament
i.) Indian space agency ISRO will be conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2014 in recognition of its contribution in strengthening international cooperation in peaceful use of outer space.
ii.) The award jury, chaired by Vice President Hamid Ansari, made the announcement on Wednesday.
iii.) “The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development is awarded to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in recognition of its path-breaking achievement, culminating in the Mars orbiter mission, its significant contribution in strengthening international cooperation in peaceful use of outer space,” a statement said.

5. Army will become network-centric by 2020
i.) The Army will be network-enabled by 2017 and fully network-centric by 2020 in spite of the delays in the modernisation process, Lt. Gen. Philip Campose, Vice-Chief of Army Staff said on Monday.
ii.) Expressing concern that more and more State agencies of other countries were getting involved in espionage and hacking, Lt. Gen. Campose said the Army would fast-track critical communication infrastructure projects in collaboration with industry.
iii.) He was delivering the inaugural address at Defcom India-2014, jointly organised by the Corps of Signals and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).To improve network centricity, technologies such as the Army Static Communication Network and the Army Wide Area Network are already in place.

6. Srikanth continues good form, Sindhu wins in Hong Kong
i.) Newly-crowned China Open champion Kidambi Srikanth continued his giant-killing spree,
while teen sensation P.V. Sindhu too started her campaign on a winning note at the USD 350,000 Hong Kong Super Series in Kowloon here on Wednesday.
ii.) Srikanth, who had stunned five-time world champion Lin Dan in the China Open final last week to become the first male shuttler to win a Super Series Premier event, shocked seventh seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 18—21 22—20 21—16 in his men’s singles campaign opener.
iii.) Seventh seed Sindhu, who had skipped the China Open, notched up a thrilling 21—15 16—21 21—19 win over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbumrungpan in a women’s singles match that lasted 52 minutes.

7. State hopes to declare 1,000 villages ‘open defecation free’ by R-Day
i.) The Karnataka Government has set the target of declaring 1,000 villages across the country and Udupi district in coastal Karnataka as “open defecation free” by January 26, said Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj H.K. Patil.
ii.) Though Karnataka had earlier declared over 100 villages as “open defecation free”, a third-party investigation by the department had proved that nearly 80 per cent of them were false claims, forcing it to peg the number at 20, said the minister, speaking at a media workshop on the occasion of World Toilet Day on Wednesday. He said that the government hopes to bring 10,000 villages under the list by August 15, 2015.
Mr. Patil said that plans are afoot to build 20 lakh public toilet complexes that will include not only lavatories but also bathing areas. About 1,000 such toilet complexes will be built in the first phase, the minister added. Under the ‘Swachch Bharat Mission’, Karnataka plans to build 10 lakh toilets in houses by 2014-15, of which over 36,000 have been completed according official statistics.

Inflation drops to 5-year low
i.) Slowing for the fifth consecutive month, wholesale inflation cooled to a five-year low of
1.8 per cent in October against 2.4 per cent in September. The decline was led by softening food prices and the favourable statistical effect of a higher base last year.
ii.) Food inflation cooled to 2.7 per cent from 3.5 per cent in September, according to the official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data released on Friday. Inflation in vegetables dropped to minus 19.6 per cent. Prices of wheat, vegetables, eggs, fish and meat fell in October, according to the official data.
iii.) Industry chambers cheered the steep fall in the WPI inflation and made renewed calls for the Reserve Bank to
slash interest rates. Economists, however, warned that the moderation in WPI inflation was in some part a statistical illusion and the trend could change post-December.

India’s GDP to grow at 6.3% in 2015: Morgan Stanley
i.) India would have the fastest economic expansion among Asian countries and its gross domestic product is expected to grow by 6.3 per cent in 2015, according to Morgan Stanley forecasts of global economies.
ii.) The Indian rupee’s exchange rate to dollar would be at Rs. 62.2 by end of next year compared to Rs. 62 in the current quarter (Q4 this year), according to a presentation made at the Morgan Stanley’s Annual Asia Pacific Summit held here from November 12-14 said.
iii.) It is seen at Rs. 62.5 in the first two quarters of next year and Rs. 62.3 in the third quarter of next year.Comparative to other Asian GDP growths, India would have the fastest economic expansion, it said. India’s gross domestic product is expected to grow by 6.3 per cent in 2015, up from 5.3 this year, it said.

GST compensation to be included in Constitutional Bill
i.) The Centre has agreed to include compensation to be paid to States for Goods and Services Tax (GST) rollout as part of the Constitutional Amendment Bill.
ii.) The compensation structure would form part of the Bill. It will be paid in tranches to the States. A consensus on this crucial issue will make it easier of the Centre to introduce the GST Bill in the ensuing winter session of Parliament beginning on November 24.
iii.) The official further said that the Finance Ministry has floated a draft Cabinet note on GST for inter-ministerial consultations."The first tranche of compensation to States will be made available in the upcoming session,” the official added.

India consolidates its no.1 ranking in ICC ODI list
i.) World champions India consolidated its top rank on the ICC ODI Team Rankings after
sweeping the series against Sri Lanka, which concluded in Ranchi.
ii.) India had started the series at third position on 113 points and finished on 117 points - two ratings points clear of South Africa, which is involved in a five-ODI series against Australia.
iii.) Sri Lanka retained their fourth position but slipped to 108 points. It now hosts England in a seven-ODI series, leading Alastair Cook’s side by one ratings point.

Modi to address NRIs in Sydney
i.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sydney on Monday on a whirlwind six-hour visit to Sydney on the second leg of his four-city tour of Australia. Mr. Modi, who arrived here from Brisbane after attending the G20 Summit, will proceed to Canberra tonight and later to Melbourne.
ii.) Mr. Modi is the first Prime Minister to visit Australia in 28 years after Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. More than 16,000 members of the Indian diaspora will pack Allphones Arena at Olympic Park here to listen to Mr. Modi at a community reception. About 5,000 more are expected to be watching the evening event on big screens outside.

Modi assures visa on arrival for Australian tourists
i.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assured a visa on arrival facility for Australian tourists and announced a two-month deadline for the long-pending merger of OCI and PIO status to woo the Indian diaspora from whom he sought support for his ambitious Clean India campaign.
ii.) Addressing a frenzied crowd of around 20,000 in the packed Allphones Arena in Sydney, Modi took a dig at the previous governments saying while they were happy to make laws, he was “happier to remove” them.
“Let’s open the windows let fresh air come in,” Modi said referring to his government’s efforts to weed out obsolete laws. Touched by the grand reception, Modi said he was honoured and humbled and will never forget this day. “I know that behind this affection lies expectations. 

Mudgal panel gives clean chit to Srinivasan
i.) In a major relief to BCCI president N. Srinivasan (who has stepped down), the Justice
Mukul Mudgal panel has given a clean chit to him in the betting and match fixing probe saying he was not involved with any of these activities.
ii.) In its report, copies of which were released on Monday, the panel said “this individual (Mr. Srinivasan) is not involved with match fixing activity. He was not found to be involved in scuttling the investigations into match fixing.”
iii.) The panel, however, held that Mr. Srinivasan along with four other BCCI officials was aware of the violation of the Players Code of Conduct of Individual three (whose name was not revealed) but no action was taken against that Individual three by any of the officials.

CBI files second chargesheet in Saradha case
i.) The Special Crime Branch of CBI filed the second chargesheet in the Saradha ponzi scam case at Alipur court on Monday.
ii.) The first chargesheet was filed at City Sessions Court on October 22 against four Saradha group companies and one owned by suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh and contained the names of accused persons Saradha group chief Sudipto Sen, his associate Debjani Mukherjee and Mr. Ghosh.
iii.) The official said that six names were named in the chargesheet including Sudipto Sen, Debjani Mukherjee, former West Bengal DGP Rajat Majumdar, businessman Sandhir Agarwal, East Bengal club official Debabrata Sarkar, Assamese singer Sadanand Gogoi, who were all arrested by the agency. The chargesheet also contained the name of Sajjan Agarwal, father of Sandhir Agarwal, who had been interrogated but not arrested by CBI.

Klaus Werner Iohannis won Romanian presidential elections 2014
i.) The mayor of Sibiu Klaus Werner Iohannis on 16 November 2014 won the 2014 presidential elections in Romania by defeating Prime Minister Victor Ponta of Social Democratic Party (PSD).
ii.) Klaus Iohannis belongs to Christian Liberal Alliance of Romania. Iohannis got 54.81 percent of the votes compared to only 45.18 percent of the votes for Victor Ponta. 
iii.) Iohannis will replace the incumbent Traian Basescu who cannot stand for re-election after serving as President for two terms.

Over 71 m rural bank accounts opened: Modi
i.) Over 71 million bank accounts have been opened through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan
Yojana so far in the villages in India and the money deposited amounts to Rs.5,000 crore, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Sydney in his address at the Allphones Arena on Monday.
ii.) Addressing the euphoric crowd of around 16,000 Indian diaspora, Mr. Modi said that this was done by the same government infrastructure, the same government servants and with the same habits, “but the work has got done”.
iii.) He said when he asked the Reserve Bank of India, he was told by the officers it would take three years to open bank accounts in the villages. He said he then approached the finance ministry which said it would take two years, while his own Prime Minister’s Office said one year.
iv.) “I heard everyone, and announced Aug 15 that I want the work in 150 days,” he said. “I said that Jan 26 is the final date, and all bank employees are on overdrive to get rural families access to the banking system.”

RBI in talks with govt to curb gold imports
i.) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said it is in discussions with the government to curb gold imports which have seen a sharp surge in the recent months putting pressure on the current account deficit (CAD).
ii.) Gold import surged almost four times to USD 4.17 billion in October from USD 1.09 billion same month a year ago.
iii.) “With the surge in gold import, which has been witnessed, it warranted a relook. Discussions are still going on between the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India. Once we know what the discussions are, further view will be taken,” RBI Deputy Governor S.S. Mundra said.

i.) The Reserve Bank today said final guidelines on Payments Banks are expected to be issued by this month-end, while norms for Small Banks may be out next month. 
ii.) "RBI has prepared the final documents. It has been referred to Government of India and presently it is there. We expect, may be, Payments Banks (guidelines) by month end. In the coming month, we would be able to release final guidelines on small banks," RBI Deputy Governor S S Mundra said here. 
iii.) The proposed Small Banks will provide a whole suite of basic banking products such as deposits and supply of credit, but in a limited area of operation. 

China to host G20 Summit of the emerging economies in 2016
i.) China will play host to the Group of Twenty (G20) Summit of the emerging economies in 2016. The decision was announced by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on 16 November 2014 in Brisbane.
ii.) In 2014, G20 Summit was hosted by Australia. Turkey took over the presidency from Australia and will host the event in Antalya in 2015. With China being selected for the 2016 presidency, the G20 troika would now consist of Turkey, Australia and China.
iii.) The leaders of the Group of 20 also announced a plan to boost global growth by more than 2 trillion US dollars over five years.

Raghuram Rajan on shortlist for BRICS bank chief post
i.) Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan, a Union Cabinet Minister and a well-known
banker in infrastructure finance have figured so far in discussions on possible candidates for BRICS’ New Development Bank president. 
ii.) This short list is not final; the Modi government is scouting for more names before it takes a decision on the nomination, a Finance Ministry source told The Hindu.
iii.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his opening statement at the BRICS leaders’ meet in Brisbane on Saturday, proposed that 2016 be set as the target for the inauguration of the BRICS Bank. “We hope to ratify the agreement by the end of the year.
iv.) We would soon nominate our candidate for the post of the presidency,” Mr. Modi said. The BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — had agreed at their sixth Summit in Fortaleza that India will nominate the first president of the bank and that its headquarters will be located in China.

G20 backs Modi’s strong pitch for repatriation of black money
i.) In a victory for India, the G20 on Sunday endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong pitch for repatriation of black money at its summit in Brisbane, echoing the government’s line on the need for transparency and disclosure of tax information.
ii.) Mr. Modi while voicing India’s support for a new global standard on automatic exchange of tax information urged every jurisdiction, especially tax havens, to provide information for tax purposes in accordance with treaty obligations.
iii.) The new global standard will be instrumental in getting information relating to unaccounted money hoarded abroad and enable its eventual repatriation, Mr. Modi said, utilising the forum of G20, which accounts for 85 per cent of world’s GDP.
iv.) The Prime Minister while flagging his concern over cross border tax avoidance and evasion also noted that increased mobility of capital and technology have created new opportunities for avoiding tax and profit sharing. The three-page communiqué was released at the end of the two-day summit of Group of 20 industrialised and leading emerging economies hosted by Australia.

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic won ATP World Tour Finals
i.) World number one Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was crowned champion of ATP World Tour finals at O2 Arena in London, UK on 16 November 2014. He was crowned after world number two Swiss Roger Federer withdrew from the title clash due to a back injury.
ii.) This was Djokovic's fourth season ending title. With this win, he also became the first tennis player to win three World Tour Finals titles consecutively since Ivan Lendl of US who won it from 1985 to 1987. The only other player to win three straight year-end titles was Ilie Nastase of Romania from 1971-73.
iii.) This was the third time that Federer had pulled out of the final and in his career. He pulled out of the Paris Masters before playing American James Blake in 2008 and before playing French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2012 in Doha.

1. Modi invites Malaysian companies to invest in India
i.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday invited Malaysian companies to come to India in a
big way, saying there are a “lot of opportunities” for them since he is giving high importance to the ambitious ‘Make in India’ campaign.
ii.) Mr. Modi’s call came during a bilateral meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak at the Myanmar International Convention Centre on the sidelines of the 12th ASEAN—India summit on the second day of his ten—day three—nation tour of Myanmar, Australia and Fiji.

iii.) I am giving lot of emphasis to makeinindia & want to invite Malaysian companies to come to India. There are lot of opportunities,” Modi tweeted shortly after his meeting. India has traditionally relied on investments from Japan, South Korea, Europe and the US.
iv.) Mr. Modi told Najib that Malaysia and India have worked together in the past and that the two countries can take this much further under his leadership. Modi and Najib also invited each other to visit their countries.

2. Jawed Usmani appointed as State Chief Information Commissioner in UP
i.) Jawed Usmani appointed as State Chief Information Commissioner (SCIC) in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
ii. Governor of UP Ram Naik on 10 November 2014 approved appointment of Jawed Usmani as CIC.
iii. A three-member committee, headed by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav selected the name of Usmani and forwarded it to the Governor. 

3. RBI tightens norms for NBFCs
i.) Tightening norms for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), the Reserve Bank of India on Monday raised the capital adequacy requirement and the net owned fund limit, among others, with an objective to mitigate risks in the sector.
ii.) With a view to streamlining the regulations for the sector, the RBI also revoked temporary suspension on issuance of Certificate of Registration (CoR) to companies that want to conduct business of non-banking financial institution (NBFI). 
iii.) As per the latest directives, the RBI has raised the limit for NBFCs to maintain the net owned fund (NOF) requirement to four times by 2017 to Rs.2 crore. At present, the NOF requirement is at Rs.25 lakh. In a phased manner, the NBFCs would be required to raise it to Rs.1 crore by March, 2016, and to further double it to Rs.2 crore by 2017.
iv.) NBFCs failing to achieve the prescribed ceiling within the stipulated time period shall not be eligible to hold the CoR (Certificate of Registration) as NBFCs. The bank will initiate the process for cancellation of CoR against such NBFCs,” it said in a notification.

4. Tendulkar’s book to be published in regional languages
i.) Due to enormous demand, the publishers of Sachin Tendulkar’s record-breaking autobiography, Playing It My Way has decided to translate the book in Indian regional languages.
ii.) Hachette India will be co-publishing Tendulkar’s autobiography after being flooded with interest from several publishers.
iii.) “The book has topped 200,000 copies in orders, already pulling ahead of both pre-order and lifetime sales of the top hardbacks — Dan Brown’s Inferno, Walter Issacson’s Steve Jobs and J K Rowling’s Casual Vacancy,” Hachette India in a release.


5. Indirect tax collections rise 5.6 per cent in April-October 
i.) Indirect tax revenues rose marginally by 5.6 per cent in the April-October period to over Rs 2.85 lakh crore, mainly on account of increase in service tax and customs collections. However, excise collection, which is an indication of economic activity, declined by 1.2 per cent during the seven month period to Rs 88,330 crore, an official statement said. 
ii.) Indirect tax collections so far this fiscal has been 45.7 per cent of the budget target of full 2014-15. The government has budgeted to collect over Rs 6.24 lakh from indirect taxes in the current fiscal, up 20.28 per cent over the collection in 2013-14. 
iii.) Service Tax collections increased 10.9 per cent during the seven months ending October to Rs 90,673 crore. This amounts to 42 per cent of the budget target. Mop up from customs rose 7.5 per cent to over Rs 1.06 lakh crore in April-October. This is 52.6 per cent of budget estimates. 
iv.) Economic growth, after remaining at sub-5 per cent in last two fiscals, is estimated to be between 5.4-5.9 per cent in 2014-15. During the April-August period of 2014-15, industrial output growth as measured by Index of Industrial Production ( IIP) grew at 2.8 per cent, as against flat production in same period of the previous fiscal. 

6. Rajnath Singh adopts Beti village in Lucknow
i.) Union Home Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh has adopted Beti village in the district under the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojna.
ii.) “The Union Home Minister has adopted Beti village in Sarojini Nagar (Assembly segment) under the model village scheme,” Secretary of BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit Virendra Tiwari said on Tuesday.
iii.) Though in Lucknow district, Beti village is not part of the Lucknow parliamentary constituency. It falls in the Mohanlalganj parliamentary constituency.

7. ASEAN summit begins in Myanmar
i.) ASEAN summit begins in Myanmar (NAY PYI TAW) The establishment of an economic
community by the end of 2015 along with plans for its future development will be a key topic of discussion among top leaders at the ASEAN summit that began here today. 
ii.) Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, along with other world leaders, including US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gathered in Myanmar's capital to discuss the establishment of an economic community within the regional bloc. 
iii.) According to the ASEAN Secretariat, 80 per cent of required measures for the community have been implemented before the 10 member states strive to build a single ASEAN market and production base, a competitive economic region, an equitable economic development and an integration into the global economy next year. 
iv.) The envisaged ASEAN community will cover some 600 million people with a combined GDP of USD 2 trillion. The summit is expected to adopt a declaration for the ASEAN community's future vision, which will serve as the basis for a comprehensive road map for the regional bloc beyond 2015. 
v.) The two-day summit also includes meetings among leaders from China, South Korea, Japan, India, New Zealand, Australia, the US and Russia. ASEAN, established in 1967, groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 

8. Narendra Modi meets Aung San Suu Kyi
i.) Prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Mayanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu
Kyi on the sidelines of the Asean summit here during his maiden trip to Southeast Asia.
ii.) Suu Kyi called on Modi at 6 pm local time at the Park Royal Hotel, where the Indian delegation is staying. This was Modi’s first meeting with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. During the course of the meeting, Suu Kyi, who has studied in India, said that she considered the country to be her “second home”.
iii.) The meeting comes at a time when Myanmar is in the middle of a national debate on whether to allow Suu Kyi to contest the 2015 parliamentary elections, from which she is barred due to a provision in the Constitution. Suu Kyi had last visited the country in November 2012.

9. 18TH SAARC SUMMIT: AN ECONOMIC AGENDA – ANALYSIS
i.) The 18th SAARC summit is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in a little less than three weeks from now. The theme of the summit is ‘deeper integration for peace and prosperity’. 
ii.) Deeper integration, in addition to the creation of a free trade area, entails liberalisation of services, investment, elimination of non-tariff barriers, and in general, going beyond traditional market  access issues.
iii.) The theme is appropriately timed, given that the neighbouring ASEAN bloc is expected to achieve the formulation of an economic community by 2015 and the larger region of the ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, Korea) +3 (Australia, New Zealand, India) is negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), also to be finalised by 2015. Compelling regional forces therefore exist for South Asia to accelerate towards deeper integration.
iv.) First, evaluate the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) for its continued relevance in the region. Second, focus on factors that could facilitate trade in South Asia. An aspect that has drawn relatively less attention but is of critical importance is the lack of financial connectivity in the region.

10. Barack Obama and Xi Jinping seal climate pact
i.) THE US and China have struck a historic pact to reduce carbon pollution levels on the eve of the G20, in a breakthrough that intensifies pressure on world leaders including Tony Abbott to commit to deeper emissions cuts.
ii.) After nine months of secret negotiations, presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping unveiled a surprise, ambitious agreement in Beijing that is designed to inject fresh momentum into international climate negotiations. It is the first time the two nations, which account for 40 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions, have agreed to work together.
iii.) “As the world’s two largest economies and emitters of greenhouse gases, we have a special responsibility to lead the global effort against climate change,” Mr Obama said.
iv.) “We hope to encourage all major economies to be ambitious so we can conclude a strong global climate agreement next year.’’

11. PM Narendra Modi invites ASEAN nations to invest in India 
i.) Asserting that India and ASEAN have "no irritants" in their ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
today invited the 10-nation bloc to be part of his country's "new" economic journey even as his strong "Make in India" pitch got the support of the grouping. 
ii.) The prime minister in his interaction in Hindi at the round table said that a "new era" of economic development, industrialisation and trade has begun in India and and that the rapidly developing country and ASEAN can be "great partner for each other.
iii.) We have embarked on a new economic journey in India, we invite you to this new environment in India," the prime minister said. ASEAN plans to become one economic community by the end of next year. 
iv.) Modi's comments came at a time when India seeks to deepen its engagement with the bloc of 10 small and medium economies. Presently, India-ASEAN trade is around USD 76 billion which is just three per cent of total ASEAN trade. They have set a target of USD 100 billion for bilateral trade by 2015.
