Australia announces new search area for MH370
  • A new search area for the missing Malaysian plane has been announced by the Australian
    government after further analysis of satellite data.
  • The search area for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will shift further south in the Indian Ocean to a 60,000-square-km arc after analysis of satellite data, Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced on Thursday.
  • “The new priority area is still focused on the seventh arc where the aircraft last communicated with satellites,” Mr. Truss, who holds the Transport portfolio, said. “We are now shifting our attention to an area further south along the arc based on these calculations.” The Boeing 777 with 239 passengers and crew disappeared on March 8, 2014 shortly after leaving Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing.
  • Mapping of the 6-km-deep ocean floor will take another three months and a search of the sea floor is expected to begin in August and take up to 12 months.

  • Sundar Pichai, who was promoted to head Google's Android division last year, seems to have quickly risen to prominence as the organisation's tallest leader after CEO Larry Page. 
  • A new Bloomberg Businessweek profile dubs him "the most powerful man in mobile" and even recounts that Pichai was essential to diffusing tensions between Samsung and Google early this year over the former's decision to relegate Android to the background in new devices. 
  • Pichai, who has an educational background in business administration, has worked for Google since 2004. He started as a product manager for Google Toolbar, an extension that Internet Explorer users could install for making quick Google searches. 
World Cup 2014 : Messi shines again as Argentina beat Nigeria 3-2 to top group
  • After waiting for over 90 minutes to score against Iran, Lionel Messi took three to get one on
    Wednesday. And it took Nigeria only a minute to cancel that out through Ahmed Musa. It was the first time ever in a World Cup that both teams had scored inside the first five minutes.
  • Just to show it wasn't a fluke, the teams did it again in the first five minutes of the second half. Musa scored again breaking through the inner defence after a give-go with Emmanuel Emenike. Marcos Rojo then got his first international goal with the most fortuitous of knee touches. Argentina won 3-2 but both teams qualified to the pre-quarter finals.
Flipkart launches its own brand of tablet devices 
  • Online retailer Flipkart launched its own brand of tablet devices today. As reported first by ET on June 16th, the tablet is being unveiled under the company's in-house electronics and accessories brand—Digiflip. 
  • Called Digiflip Pro XT712, the tablet will be the first of many models that Flipkart will launch, the company announced today. The XT712 is priced at Rs 9,999 and is available in black and white variants. The seven-inch tablet's features include 1280 x 800 pixel high-definiti .. 
BCCI hails Srinivasan’s appointment as ICC chairman
  • The BCCI on Thursday congratulated its president-in-exile N. Srinivasan for becoming the first Chairman of the ICC, saying there could not have been a better person for the position. The ICC, in its Annual Conference held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground unanimously approved the revamp of its corporate governance structure by amending the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
  • “The BCCI wishes to congratulate Mr. N. Srinivasan on being unanimously elected as the first Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the period 2014-2016 of two years, post its historic restructuring,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a release.
Tata-led Neotel signs broadband deal in South Africa
  • Tata-led South African telecom operator Neotel has secured a ground breaking deal with the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) and the Western Cape provincial government to provide broadband services across the province over the next three years.
  • The project is a first-of-its-kind in South Africa and has strict guidelines to deliver sites and service levels in a true public-private partnership, by leveraging the skills, resources and expertise of each party for the provision of broadband services across the Province, the company said.
  • “The Western Cape government is focused on realizing its vision for the province and Neotel is extremely pleased to play the role of a partner to make the vision a reality,” the managing director and CEO of Neotel, Sunil Joshi, said.
