India and Vietnam signed Joint Vision Statement on Defence Cooperation 2015-2020
(i) India and Vietnam on 25 May 2015 signed a Joint Vision Statement on Defence Cooperation for the period 2015-2020 in New Delhi.
(ii) It was signed by the Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the Vietnamese Minister for National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh.
(iii) The statement is an outcome of delegation level talks held in New Delhi to discuss cooperation on maritime security.
(iv) Besides the Joint statement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the Coast Guards of the two countries was also signed in the presence of the two Defence Ministers.

Director-Producer Marty Pasetta passed away
(i) Academy Awards telecast director Marty Pasetta passed away on 21 May 2015 following injuries sustained in a car accident in La Quinta, United States. 
(ii) He was 82. Pasetta is survived by his wife Elise, daughter Debbie, son Gregory and five grandchildren.
(iii) Pasetta was famously known as a veteran director of live TV extravaganzas including 17 Academy Awards shows. 
(iv) During four decades in television, Pasetta directed and produced specials for Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby and oversaw tributes to Elizabeth Taylor, Fred Astaire and Alfred Hitchcock.

‘Four Indians among world’s 100 most powerful women’
(i) SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya, ICICI bank head Chanda Kochhar, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and HT Media Chair Shobhana Bhartia are among the world’s 100 most powerful women, according to the Forbes’ annual list which is topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
(ii) Two women of Indian-origin PepsiCo Chief Indra Nooyi and Cisco Chief Technology and Strategy Officer Padmasree Warrior also make the list.
(iii) Forbes’s 12th annual list of the 100 most influential women feature extraordinary entrepreneurs, visionary CEOs, politicians, celebrity role models, billionaire activists and pioneer philanthropists who are “transforming the world” and have been “ranked by dollars, media presence and impact“.
(iv) The top 10 include US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton (2), philanthriopist Melinda Gates (3), Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen (3), GM CEO Mary Barra (5), IMF Chief Christine Lagarde (6), Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff (7), Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg (8), YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki (9) and US First Lady Michelle Obama (10).

Gujjar stir: HC summons Chief Secretary
(i) Pulling up the State government for giving a “free-hand” to Gujjar agitators, Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday directed the Chief Secretary and the police chief to appear before it on Thursday and also immediately restore traffic on Jaipur-Agra national highway.
(ii) “We would like to hear from the State Chief Secretary and Director General of Police what the administration did in the last few days to remove the rail and road blockade and why were the agitators given a free hand to take law into their own hands,” a single judge Bench said.

CS Santosh presented with 2014 FMSCI Motorsport Man of the Year Award
(i) India’s off-road racer CS Santosh on 25 May 2015 was presented with the Motorsport Man of the Year Award at the 2014 Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) Price Distribution Ceremony held in Bangaluru, Karnataka.

(ii) He received the Raymond Gautam Singhania Rolling Trophy along with 2 lakh rupees as cash prize from Gautam Singhania, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Raymond Group.

NRI scientist Latha Venkataraman created first single-molecule device
(i) NRI scientist Latha Venkataraman on 25 May 2015 created first single-molecule device.  The electronic device has a potential of real-world technological applications for nanoscale devices. 
(ii) The report was published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
(iii) Under the direction of Venkataraman, researchers created a single-molecule diode which performs 50 times better than all prior designs.
(iv) A team of Columbia Engineering researchers has constructed a device where the active element is only a single molecule, has long been a tantalising dream in nanoscience.

Paytm to sell Chinese products
Paytm to sell Chinese products
(i) Jack Ma-led online retail giant Alibaba’s marketplace AliExpress will start selling Chinese goods to Indian consumers from June through mobile wallet company Paytm.
(ii) In February, Alibaba, through Ant Financial Services, had acquired 25 per cent stake in One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm. 
(iii) With the launch of the service, Alibaba will get an entry into the booming Indian e-retail market.
(iv) AliExpress, launched in 2010, is the global marketplace of Alibaba and it lists Chinese businesses offering products to international online buyers.
(v) In the first phase, AliExpress, through Paytm, will bring fashion products, fashion accessories, general merchandise such as Chinese toys, bags, home decor and unstructured category, including electronic accessories to Indian consumers.
