(i) Shalini Mishra, who has been appointed as Commissioner of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), took charge here on Thursday. 
(ii) The posting came in the wake of Chief Minister K. Chadrasekhara Rao looking at a complete revamp of the urban planning body amid mounting criticisms of its functioning particularly in the last few months.
(iii) The new Commissioner is expected to present a blue print suggesting a complete overhaul of the crisis-ridden HMDA in a fortnight’s time.

Shah Rukh Khan honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2015
(i) Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was on 21 April 2015 honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2015 for his performance in the movie Happy New Year. The award ceremony was held in Mumbai.

Cabinet approved amendments to the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Bill 2014
(i) The Union Cabinet on 22 April 2015 approved amendments to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill 2014
(ii) The bill seeks to amend the Justice Juvenile (JJ) Act, 2000 to try juveniles who are accused of heinous crimes under laws for adults.

(iii) Some of the approved amendments to the JJ (Amendment) Bill, 2014 include The period of preliminary inquiry by the Juvenile Justice Board in case of heinous offences committed by children in the age group of 16-18 years has been enhanced.
(iv) The amendments to the JJ Bill were made after it was found that the provisions were discriminatory in nature on the grounds of Article 14 (right to equality), Article 21 (requiring that laws and procedures are fair and reasonable) and Article 20(1) (higher penalty for the same offence).
The Bill replaces the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.
(v) It provides for constitution of a Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) for every district for exercising the powers and discharging its functions relating to children in conflict with law. 

BSNL to allow unlimited free calling at night
BSNL to allow unlimited free calling at night
(i) Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) on Thursday said it will introduce unlimited free calling at night from its landline phones to all landline and mobile phones of all service providers across India from May 1.
(ii) “This unlimited free night calling shall be available from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.,” a company statement said.
(iii) The scheme covers all major landline general plans of rural and urban areas for both landline and broadband connections.
(iv) “BSNL landline phone offers voice clarity. Now landline customers can make unlimited calls comfortably anywhere in India to all networks from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. without paying call charges,” the statement added.

Union Sports Ministry suspended recognition of Paralympic Committee of India
(i) The Union Sports Ministry on 22 April 2015 suspended the recognition of Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) with immediate effect. 
(ii) It was suspended for poor management and conduct of 15th National Para-Athletics Championships held in Ghaziabad in March 2015.
(iii) The government took the action in the backdrop of the report of the inquiry conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). 
(iv) SAI in its report found that the PCI failed miserably in providing adequate facilities to the para-athletes during the National Para Athletics Championships 2015 held from 20 March to 22 March 2015.
(v) Earlier on 7 April 2015, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) had suspended its president Rajesh Tomar and had constituted a three-member inquiry committee headed by Justice (retd) Shankara Ramakrishnan.

(i) The newly elected Rajya Sabha members from Kerala took oath of office on Thursday. 
(ii) The new members are Vayalar Ravi and P V Abdul Wahab from UDF and K K Ragesh from the Left. Vice-president Hameed Ansari administered the oath. 
(ii) Vayalar Ravi is becoming a Rajya Sabha member for the fourth time. It is second term for Wahab, while for Ragesh, it is his first.

China, Japan, India woo Asia, Africa in Jakarta
(i) Sixty years after the Bandung conference, China, Japan and India are opening their wallets, and perhaps their hearts, to woo Asia and Africa — signaling how developmental economics has upstaged the non-aligned doctrine that was the flavour of the day in 1955.
(ii) In his keynote address, Chinese President Xi Jinping, announced duty free access to 97 per cent items produced in the Least Developing Countries, which have diplomatic ties with China.
(iii) He pointed out that Tokyo would offer industrial training and technology to 350,000 people throughout the region. 
(iv) The Prime Minister added that trade deals under negotiations, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific “will all eventually head toward Africa.”
(v) The summit provided an opportunity for a 29 minute one-on-one exchange between President Xi and Mr. Abe. At the end of the encounter, which analysts said signaled recognition by both countries not to derail

HDFC Bank Q4 net rises 20.6 p.c.
HDFC Bank Q4 net rises 20.6 p.c.
(i) HDFC Bank Ltd, India’s second-biggest private sector lender by assets, reported on Thursday a 20.6 per cent rise in quarterly profit, beating estimates.
(ii) The Mumbai-based lender said net profit rose to Rs. 2,807 crore in its fiscal fourth quarter to end-March from Rs. 2,327 crore a year earlier.
(iii) Analysts on average had expected a net profit of Rs. 2,780 crore, according to data compiled by Thomson Reuters.

ICICI Bank launched payment service Tap-n-Pay
(i) Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) Bank on 21 April 2015 launched Tap-n-Pay, a near-field communications-enabled payment service. The service was launched in collaboration with Tech Mahindra.
(ii) To start with this service, bank has offered it at large campuses of corporate offices. ICICI Bank and Tech Mahindra also are planning to extend this service across the country.

(i) World No. 1 Saina Nehwal started her campaign with a hard—fought win, while P V Sindhu too continued her rampaging run but it was curtains for top men’s shuttler Parupalli Kashyap at the $ 200,000 Badminton Asia Championship in Wuhan on Thursday.
(ii) Olympic bronze-medallist, Saina, who got a bye and a walkover in the first two rounds, was off the blocks with a 21-14 10-21 21-10 win over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a women’s singles match that lasted for an hour and seven minutes.
(iii) Commonwealth Games champion Kashyap, who had played a long match on Wednesday against Chinese Taipei’s Jen Hao Hsu, could not continue his winning run as his gallant fight ended with a 23-21 17-21 8-21 loss to seventh seed Zhengming Wang of China.
(iv) Among other Indians, the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy B sank 10-21 13-21 against third seeds Xiaolong Liu and Zihan Qiu of China.
(v) The mixed doubles pair of Arun Vishnu and Aparna Balan also went down 13-21 5-21 to Kai Lu and Yaqiong Huang of China.
