1. Rohit's double ton powers India to 404 for 5
i.) Rohit Sharma on Thursday created history by hitting the highest individual ODI score with an
incredible knock of 264 to power India to a mammoth 404 for five in fourth cricket one-dayer against Sri Lanka here today.
ii.) Returning after a 10-week injury layoff, nothing went wrong for Sharma since he was dropped on four, as he paced his innings beautifully before exploding against the hapless looking Lankan attack, smashing 173-ball 264 studded with 33 boundaries and nine sixes here at the Eden Gardens.
iii.) Sharma also broke his compatriot Virender Sehwag’s earlier record of 219 runs, which he had set against West Indies in 2011. Sharma also became the first and only batsman to register two double centuries in ODIs. He also hit record number of boundaries during his innings.
2. Pak test-fires nuclear capable ballistic missile
i.) Pakistan on Thursday successfully test-fired a ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads to targets as far as 1,500 kilometres, bringing many Indian cities under its range.
ii.) The intermediate-range missile Shaheen—II, also called Hatf VI, was launched from an undisclosed location and its impact point was in the Arabian Sea, the military said. The successful launch was the culminating point of the Field Training Exercise of Army Strategic Forces Command.
iii.) The purpose of the launch was to ensure operational readiness of a Strategic Missile Group besides re-validating different design and technical parameters of the weapon system, the military said in a statement.
3. Modi meets Medvedev
i.) Ahead of next month’s annual Indo-Russia summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday
met Russian Premier Dmitry Medvedev who said India is a “close and valued” partner for his country.
ii.) The meeting with the Russian leader was the first diplomatic engagement of Mr. Modi on the third day of his 10-day three-nation tour of Myanmar, Australia and Fiji on the sidelines of the two back-to-back India-ASEAN and East Asia summits here.
iii.) Mr. Modi also recalled his visit to Russia in 2001. During their conversation, Mr. Modi also spoke on the need for the federal units — states and regions of the two countries to cooperate more, a view which Mr. Medvedev endorsed.
iv.) Russian President Vladimir Putin is travelling to New Delhi next month for the 15th annual India-Russia summit.
4. Launch of 'The Hindu' School Edition in Mangaluru
i.) Beginning from Thursday, as many as 1,250 students from 17 schools in Mangaluru and Udupi are
getting The School Edition of The Hindu free of cost under the Corporate Social Responsibility scheme of the city-based Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers (MCF).
ii.) 5. Kohli joins star Ambassadors for 2015 World Cup
i.) India’s Virat Kohli joins an elite list of star Ambassadors to provide necessary support in the build-up to the ICC 2015 World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand between February and March.
ii.) Kohli, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, all-rounder Shane Watson, New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum and Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara have been appointed ambassadors for cricket’s most—anticipated event, which is now only 92 days away.
iii.) The ICC Ambassadors will add their support and considerable profile in the build-up to and during the showpiece event. The star players will also be involved in the ICC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and event promotions.
iv.) Aussie speedster and World Cup winner Johnson, was delighted to be part of the elite group that will be supporting the 50-over WOrld Cup.
6. India not bidding for 2015 and 2016 FIFA Club World Cups
i.) India has pulled out of mounting a bid for 2015 and 2016 FIFA Club World Cups, according to All India Football Federation officials. A decision on the host city of the 2015 and 2016 editions of Club World Cup will be taken in Morocco next month.
ii.) Morocco has hosted the 2013 edition and it is hosting the tournament next year again. With India hosting the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017, it was thought feasible for the country to host the 2015 and 2016 Club World Cups, as the eight-match club tournament would need just two world-class venues.
iii.) The AIFF has abandoned the idea of bidding for the top club tournament of the FIFA though it had officially expressed its desire to host the event. The Club World Cup bid is normally done for two consecutive editions.
7. BJP Kashmir candidate opposes repeal of Article 370
i.) Hina Bhat, BJP candidate for the Amira Kadal assembly constituency here, Thursday said she does not support abrogation of Article 370 and expressed the hope the contentious issue would not figure in the party's manifesto for the state elections.
ii.) IANS asked Bhat whether she stood by her statement in local media that she would be the first to pick up the gun if Article 370 was abrogated, she said: "It is my personal opinion that Article 370 cannot be abrogated."
iii.) She also questioned reports that abrogation of Article 370 would be part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) manifesto for Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls.
iv.) While inaugurating the party's media cell in Jammu, Jitendra Singh, minister of state at the Prime Minister's office (PMO), told reporters: "All issues (including Article 370) which have been part of the BJP manifesto all these years will be part of the agenda. They will continue to be so."
8. China Open: Hard-fought wins for Saina and Kashyap
i.) Saina Nehwal recovered from a mid-game slump to beat unseeded Sayaka Takahashi of Japan 21-14, 19-21, 21-17 in the first round of the China Open Super Series Premier in Fuzhou on Wednesday.
ii.) Making it a good day in office for the Indians, Parupalli Kashyap and Kidambi Srikanth joined Saina in the second round. Kashyap registered a hard-fought victory 24-22, 19-21, 21-15 over Nan Vie of Hong Kong while Srikanth defeated his friend RMV Gurusaidutt 21-11, 9-21, 21-15.
iii.) The other Indian in the fray, HS Prannoy went down fighting against Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 10-21, 21-19, 18-21.
9. 2018, 2022 World Cups set go ahead in Russia, Qatar as planned: FIFA -
i.) The soccer World Cups of 2018 and 2022 are set go ahead in Russia and Qatar as planned after
FIFA’s ethics committee said on Thursday it could find no grounds for reopening the controversial bidding process.
ii.) In a long-awaited report, the committee said that “the various incidents which might have occurred are not suited to compromise the integrity of the FIFA World Cup 2018/2022 bidding process as a whole”.
iii.) The report criticised England’s bid for the 2018 tournament for bowing to “inappropriate requests” from former CONCACAF president Jack Warner, a FIFA powerbroker at the time, in what it said was “an apparent violation of bidding rules”.
iv.) It also said that in Australia’s bid for 2022 “there are certain indications of potentially problematic conduct of specific individuals in the light of relevant FIFA Ethics rules.
