Amit Jain named president of Uber India
(i) Taxi-hailing app Uber has appointed Amit Jain president of its India operations.

(ii) “In this role, Amit will be running all business strategy, operations, and growth in a market of global strategic importance for Uber,” the company said in a statement.
(iii) “His experience as an operator, building and scaling world-class teams will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of Uber India’s growth.

Service tax from 12.36 per cent to 14 per cent
(i) Eating out, mobile phone usage and air & rail travel have become expensive from Monday with the government hiking service tax rate to 14 per cent.
(ii) The government’s proposal to increase the rate of service tax from 12.36 per cent (including education cess) to 14 per cent has come into effect from Monday.
(iii) The service tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.
(iv) Some of the key services that attract higher tax and have become costlier include, rail and air travel, banking, insurance, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, event management and tour operators.
(v) Mobile operators and credit card companies have already sent messages to subscribers conveying the increase in service tax rate, which will have a bearing on the bills.

(i) Defending champion Maria Sharapova’s bid for a third French Open title in four years is over.
(ii) Coughing between points on an overcast day, the second-seeded Sharapova was outplayed throughout a 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss to 13-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round Monday.
(iii) The second set began similarly, with Safarova breaking to go ahead 2—0, then holding for 3—0. But Sharapova, gritty as can be, did not give up, and when Safarova double—faulted on break point, suddenly it was 3—2.

Modi to be first Indian PM in Israel
(i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Israel, making him the first Indian Premier to visit the country, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said here on Sunday.
(ii) Mr. Modi had also made a marked break from precedent when he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. 
(iii) At the time, despite the fact that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was in New York on the same dates, the government had not sought any meeting between him and Mr. Modi.

(i) President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday arrived here on the first leg of his five-day state visit to Sweden and Belarus, the first ever by any Indian head of State, during which a number of key agreements on sustainable development, scientific research are likely to be signed.
(ii) During his three-day State visit in Sweden, the President will meet Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, and the Leader of Opposition, Anna Kinberg Batra besides number of meetings with the King and the Queen. 
(iii) The visit will focus on innovation, sustainable development, urban development and scientific research with both countries exploring ways to enhance mutual exchange in the areas of trade and science.

Sanjay Gupta new chairman of EIL
(i) Sanjay Gupta on took over as chairman and managing director of Engineers India Ltd, the state-owned engineering and consultancy, procurement and construction (EPC) company in hydrocarbons and petrochemicals.
(i) Gupta replaced A K Purwaha who superannuated on Sunday.
(ii) An Engineering graduate from IIT Roorkee, Gupta has about 34 years of experience in the company ranging from planning to implementation of mega grassroot projects in the refineries and petrochemical sector.
(iii) He took over as Director (Commercial) of EIL in July, 2012 and will have a term as head of the company till June, 2017 when he will superannuate.

(i) Bangladesh is set to honour former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 when he was a Lok Sabha member.
(ii) A Foreign Ministry spokesman familiar with the process said Bangladesh will hand over Vajpayee’s “Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the country from June 6.
(iii) Indira Gandhi was the first “foreign friend” to be conferred with the ‘Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award’. Sonia Gandhi received the honour on her behalf in 2012 at a special ceremony.
