(i) Veteran singer Asha Bhosle has been declared the greatest Bollywood playback artist of all times by the U.K. based Eastern Eye newspaper.
(ii) The 81-year-old singer beat off her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar in a first of its kind list that takes into account factors including number of songs, honours, international impact, versatility, fan base and popularity amongst fellow music industry professionals.
(iii) Whilst Lata Mangeshkar came second in the list of talented singers, Mohd Rafi came third and Kishore Kumar was fourth.
(iv) The full list of the greatest 20 Bollywood playback singers is published in Eastern Eye newspaper on June 26, 2015.
(i) Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, whose character was recently killed off in the shocking season finale of the HBO series, has replaced Robert Pattinson in upcoming movie Brimstone.
(ii) Harington, 28, is joining Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning in the thriller written and directed by Martin Koolhover.
(iii) His Game of Thrones co-star Carice van Houten also joins the cast along with Paul Anderson, Jack Roth and Carla Juri.
(iv) Meanwhile, Pattinson, who has two upcoming films Life and Queen of the Desert releasing later this year, will be working on his next movies The Lost City of Z and The Trap.
(i) Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has jumped two places to the 10th position in the ICC bowler’s rankings issued on Thursday.
(ii) Ashwin, who bagged six wickets in the three ODIs against Bangladesh, was India’s leading wicket-taker in the just-concluded three-match series againsr Bangladesh and is also the only Indian to feature in the top-10 list.
(iii) But Ashwin stayed well behind young Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman (13 scalps in 3 matches), who got an 88th rank in the chart led by Australia’s Mitchell Starc.
(iv) In the batting chart, Virat Kohli tops the Indian player’s list at the fourth position as opener Shikhar Dhawan, who was the leading run-getter in the series with an accumulated score of 158, dropped a place to seventh.
India among top 10 FDI recipients
(i) After 2008, for the first time, India again broke in to the top 10 recipients of foreign direct investment (FDI) during 2014, the UNCTAD said in its World Investment Report 2015 on Wednesday.
(ii) India jumped to the ninth rank in 2014 with a 22 per cent rise in FDI inflows to $34 billion. India was at the 15th position in the previous two years.
(iii) India, however, is the only BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) country that hasn’t yet crossed the $50 billion-a-year FDI mark.
(iv) The report also found that developing countries lost $100 billion in tax revenues owing to investors routing FDI through tax havens such as Mauritius, and has made a strong case for multilateral action to address the issue.
(i) The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that for the first time in the country, the people, and the urban leadership would play the pivotal role in deciding the future course of their cities.
(ii) He was speaking at the launch of three major urban development initiatives: AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation); Smart Cities Mission; and Housing for All (Urban), at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
(iii) The Prime Minister said these urban development schemes were not prepared by the government alone, but involved perhaps the biggest consultation exercise ever taken by the Union Government, involving all stakeholders and examining global best practices.
KV Kamath quits as IIM-I chairman
(i) Noted banker and newly appointed chief of New Development Bank of BRICS nations, KV Kamath, has stepped down from the post of chairman of Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIM-I) board of governors (BoG) and society.
(ii) Kamath was nominated by the government of India as chairperson of BoG and society of IIM-Indore on May 18, 2012.
(iii) "IIM-Indore would like to place on record its deep appreciation for contribution of Kamath during his tenure as chairman," said Parvez.
(iv) He said as per memorandum of associations and rules of IIM-Indore, secretary of Union ministry of human resource development (HRD) will be the chairman until a new chairperson is appointed.
(i) India’s legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been voted the ‘Best Test player’ of the 21st century in an online poll conducted by Cricket Australia’s website.
(ii) The former India skipper got the highest number of votes to emerge on top of the list of the 100 best Test players since 2000, in a poll conducted by cricket.com.au.
(iii) Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara received the second highest votes, followed by Adam Gilchrist of Australia in the third position.
(iv) The 42-year-old Tendulkar, who is the only batsman to have hit 100 international centuries, holds the record for highest run scorer in both Tests and One-Day Internationals.
