India beats Pakistan by 76 runs
(i) Virat Kohli scored an imperious century as India opened their World Cup defence in convincing
fashion with a 76-run victory over Pakistan in a frenzied atmosphere at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
(ii) The much-anticipated Pool B grudge match, the latest chapter in one of the great rivalries in sport, attracted a passionate crowd of 41,587 to the revamped ground with up to a billion more tuning in on the sub-continent and around the world.
(iii) It was the two thirds of the crowd dressed in the blue of India who had most to cheer, though, as Kohli brushed aside concerns over his recent one-day form with a knock of 107 to drive his side to an imposing tally of 300 for seven.

Tintu Luka won gold in 800m in 35th National Games
(i) Middle-distance runner Tintu Lukka on 13 february 2015 won gold in 800m in 35th National Games.
(ii) In 800m race, she broke the 18 years old record of Rosa Kutty of Kerala. Tintu finished the distance with a time of 2:01.86 sec to win gold. The previous record of 2:03.08 sec was in the name of Rosa Kutty of Karnataka in 2007.
(iii) Gomathi Marimuthu of Tamil Nadu finished second with 2:05.09 sec to win silver and Kerala Markose won bronze with a timing of 2:06.37 sec.
BrahMos missile successfully test-fired from INS Kolkata
(i) India on 14 February 2015 successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from Indian Navy's latest destroyer INS Kolkata.
(ii) The launch off the Goa coast was flawless as the missile met all its designed parameters.
(iii) BrahMos is a missile with a range of 290 kilometers and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kilograms.
(iv) It has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is three times faster than the US subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.
(v) This speed makes BrahMos one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world. It can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft and land.
RBI decided to bring back one rupee notes
(i) The Reserve Bank of India on 13 February 2015 announced that soon the currency notes of one rupees denomination will be in circulation. The notes will be printed by the Government of India.
(ii) RBI in its release informed that these currency notes are legal tender as provided in The Coinage Act 2011.
(iii) It said that the existing currency notes in this denomination in circulation will also continue to be legal tender.
Foreign Minister’s U.S. visit successful: Sri Lanka
(i) The Sri Lankan government on Sunday said its Foreign Minister’s just-concluded visit to the U.S. was successful.
(ii) Minister Mangala Samaraweera briefed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the efforts taken by the new Sri Lankan government to address human rights concerns, Xinhua reported.
(iii) Sri Lanka has been accused of committing human rights abuses during the final stages of the war between Tamil Tigers and the military which ended in May 2009.
The biggest game of the World Cup today
(i) The Indian cricket team’s recent run in Australia has not been encouraging.
(ii) The tour has been arduous in every sense and the solitary win has come against Afghanistan in a warm-up match.
(iii) With all the hype around Sunday’s India-Pakistan match, it won’t be wrong to say that it is the biggest game of the tournament.
(iv) For the first time in the history of the World Cup, India and Pakistan are playing each other in their opening match. Exciting no doubt, but it can be a double-edged sword.
Kejriwal appointed Delhi Chief Minister
(i) President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday night appointed Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister of Delhi along with six Cabinet Ministers.
(ii) A Home Ministry statement said the President appointed Mr. Kejriwal as the Chief Minister of Delhi with effect from the date he is sworn in.
(iii) “The President, on the advice of the Chief Minister, has also appointed Manish Sisodia, Asim Ahmed Khan, Sandeep Kumar, Satyendar Jain, Gopal Rai and Jitender Singh Tomar as Ministers of Delhi,” the statement said.
(iv) Earlier, the President revoked the order issued on February 16, 2014 under article 239AB of the Constitution imposing central rule in Delhi to pave the way for installation of an elected government.
Modi calls for innovation in renewable energy
(i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for innovation and research to develop renewable energy to provide affordable electricity to every household.
(ii) Inaugurating the first Renewable Energy Global Investors Meet (RE-Invest), Mr. Modi called for collaboration between the 50 nations with abundant solar power to develop technological solutions.
(iii) Stating that the role of energy in development was very important, he said, “We want to increase speed and at the same time scale new heights of development and one of the sectors is energy.”
(iv) “We are focussing on renewable energy not for laurels but to lighten homes of the poor and bring a change in their lives,” he said. “We have ponds, can we think of solar panels on top of these ponds? We need to think of innovative ideas.”
