World Tuberculosis Day 2015 observed globally
(i) World Tuberculosis Day (WTD) 2015 was globally observed on 24 March 2015. The theme for the year 2015 is continuation of the 2014 theme Reach the 3 Million. The main sub-theme and message for the year 2015 is Reach, Treat, Cure Everyone. (ii) The WTD is annually celebrated on 24 March to commemorate the day on which Dr. Robert Koch discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus in 1882.
(iii) The day aims to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease.
(iv) World TB Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Union Ministry of Health and Welfare launched Media Campaign for Mission Indradhanush
(i) Union Ministry of Health and Welfare on 23 March 2015 launched Media Campaign for Mission Indradhanush.
(ii) The media campaign includes a song composed by Bollywood lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar.
(iii) The campaign was launched for creating awareness regarding the importance to fully immunize every child against all vaccine preventable diseases in the country.
(iv) The week-long drive will start on World Health Day on 7 April 2015 and will be repeated on the 7th day of each of the following four months.
(v) It will cover all children less than two years of age and pregnant women.
Maharashtra Government announced to make Sale of Gutka a non-bailable offence
(i) State Government of Maharashtra on 23 March 2015 announced that those involved in the sale of gutka in the state will be booked under Section 328 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), that is, sale of gutka will be made a non-bailable offence.
(ii) The decision was announced by State Food and Drug Minister Girish Bapat in the State Legislative Assembly.
(iii) Until now, the manufacture and sale of Gutka was banned in Maharashtra, but was not implemented effectively leading to smuggling of the tobacco-laced chewing products in the state from neighbouring states. Maharashtra banned the sale of gutka in July 2012.
Shashi Kapoor selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2014
(i) The Union Government on 23 March 2015 announced that Shashi Kapoor was selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2014. (ii) The 77-year-old the veteran film actor and producer is the 46th Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner.
(iii) The 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke award to Shashi Kapoor made him the third member of Kapoor family to receive the award after Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor.
(iv) He started acting in films as a child in late 1940s and his best known performances as child artist were in Aag (1948), Awaara (1951) and Sangram (1950).
(v) In these two films, he played the younger version of the character played by his elder brother Raj Kapoor. In Sangram, he played younger version of Ashok Kumar.
Indian Railways launched RuPay pre-paid debit cards
(i) Indian Railways on 24 March 2015 launched its own RuPay pre-paid card.
(ii) The card will enable passengers to book their Rail tickets and do shopping using RuPay pre-paid debit cards.
(iii) Card can be availed from either the Union Bank or the IRCTC.
(iv) The RuPay pre-paid card was launched by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the Railways' tourism and catering arm, in collaboration with the Union Bank of India.
(v) RuPay is India's own card payment gateway network and provides an alternative system for banks to provide debit card service.
Supreme Court declared Section 66A of Information Technology Act, 2000 as
unconstitutional(i) The Supreme Court (SC) of India on 24 March 2015 declared Section 66A of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 as unconstitutional and struck it down.
(ii) The section empowers law enforcement agencies to arrest those who post objectionable content online and provides for a three-year jail term.
(iii) It violates the citizens fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression provided in the Article 19 (1)(a), not saved by Article 19(2), of the Constitution of India.
