Noted Journalist BG Verghese Dies at 87
(i) Eminent journalist BG Verghese, a Ramon Magsaysay award winner and former editor of leading dailies Hindustan Times and Indian Express, died in Gurgaon today at the age of 87 after brief illness.
(ii) Mr Verghese was diagnosed for dengue a month back and was suffering from low-grade fever and weakness for last couple of weeks. He was survived by his wife Jamila and sons Vijay and Rahul.

China launches website to claim islands disputed with Japan
(i) China on Tuesday launched a website for an uninhabited islet chain in the East China Sea that is at the centre of a long dispute with Japan, in its latest bid to assert sovereignty over an archipelago administered by Tokyo.
(ii) The dedicated website on the Diaoyu Islands, also called Senkakus by Japan, was launched by China's State Oceanic Administration (SOA).

Malayalam film director Madhu Kaithapram dies at 44
(i) Eminent film director Madhu Kaithapram (44) died at a private hospital in Kozhikode on Monday night. 
(ii) He was undergoing treatment for diabetes for quite some time and the death came around 11.30pm.
(iii) The director of many films that got critical acclamation and public acceptance, Madhu Kaithapram entered the film industry as the assistant of director Jayaraj. 
(iv) His debut as an independent director was in 2006, with Ekantham, which won him national award for the best debutant director. 

Six new airlines to start operations in the new year: Government 
(i) Six new airlines are expected to fly the Indian skies next year, the government said today as it asked states to join hands to promote regional connectivity and help the aviation sector meet its burgeoning losses by reducing taxes on jet fuel. 
(ii) "Most of the airlines in the country are reported to have incurred losses and some airlines are struggling to stay afloat despite a high (air traffic) growth rate," Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said at a meeting of state Civil Aviation Ministers here.
(iii) While AirAsia India has launched operations, Vistara, the Tata-SIA joint venture carrier, would start flights from January nine. 

Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic named World Champions for 2014
(i) Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were named as men's and women's World Champions for 2014 on Thursday by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). 
(ii) It is the fourth time that Djokovic has taken the top award after he won Wimbledon, the ATP World Tour finals and finished the year ranked number one in the world by the ATP. 
(iii) Williams won the US Open, the 18th Grand Slam title of her career, the WTA Tour Championship and was also ranked number one by the WTA. 

Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi shifted to Mizoram
(i) Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has been shifted to Mizoram with K.K. Paul
appointed in his place. 
(ii) Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term.
(iii) Besides, Meghalaya Governor Krishan Kant Paul has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Uttarakhand for the remainder of his term.
(iv) Paul will continue to hold the additional charge of the office of the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties, till further orders.

N. Sridhar the new CMD of SCCL
(i) Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday appointed N. Sridhar as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL). 
(ii) He will replace the incumbent Sutirtha Bhattacharya, who has already been chosen to head the Coal India Ltd.
(iii) Mr. Sridhar, a 1997 batch IAS officer, is presently working as District Collector of Ranga Reddy district. 
(iv) The government has also issued orders relieving Mr. Bhattacharya from the SCCL post on Tuesday.

Film on Gopinath Munde in the works
(i) A biopic on the political journey of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde is on the cards. 
(ii) Titled “Sangharsh Yatra” the film will trace the life of Munde, considered a prominent OBC leader in Maharashtra, from 1971, when he entered college, to June 4, 2014 when he died in a car crash in New Delhi.
(iii) The film is being made in association with the BJP Chitrapat Union, the party's cine wing that was launched just after the Lok Sabha polls. 
(iv) The Chitrapat union was conceived by Munde himself.

Dhoni retires from Test cricket
(i) Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday retired from Test cricket with immediate effect, citing strain of playing all formats, after his team lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.
(ii) “One of India’s greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings M.S. Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of Cricket,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Air India plans to spend $1 billion to strengthen fleet
(i) India’s oldest airline, Air India Ltd, plans to spend at least $1 billion in 2015 buying new aircraft to combat new entrants as well as existing airlines that are expanding their own fleets. 
(ii) The state-run airline could add at least 20 fuel-efficient planes by leasing, or swapping existing orders with plane makers, two executives at the airline said, asking not to be identified.
