President signs ordinance on insurance, coal
(i) President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday signed two key ordinances allowing hike in the FDI cap in the insurance sector and facilitating e-auction of coal blocks.
(ii) The NDA Government had recommended promulgation of these ordinances after failing to get them passed in Parliament.
Re-promulgation
(iii) The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, 2014 was passed by the Lok Sabha but could not be taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha, pushing the government to recommend a re-promulgation of the coal ordinance.
Additional capital inflow
(iv) The government hopes the increased FDI cap would bring in additional capital inflow of USD 6-8 billion to the insurance sector.

Send a complaint directly to Haryana CM
(i) On the very day of its launch, the chief minister's web portal in Gurgaon, set up to ensure time-bound response to citizens' complaints, received 24 complaints.
(ii) The service was launched in all 21 districts of Haryana on Thursday to mark Good Governance Day and improve coordination between the authorities and the public.
(iii) Citizens can file complaints in the window addressed directly to CM Manohar Lal Khattar, without having to go to the state capital in Chandigarh.

Mumbai Metro smartcard goes online
(i) Commuters need not stand in queues at Metro stations to top up smartcards.
(ii) Mumbai Metro launched a commuter-friendly service on Christmas day.
(iii) Over 50 banks will offer the facility to recharge smartcards online. 
(iv) The service is offered to commuters at no additional cost.

Modi leads good governance carol

(i) It was Christmas for the rest of the world, but for the Modi government, it was Good Governance Day on Thursday — the regime’s tribute to BJP veteran and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 90th birthday.
(ii) Schools and universities in the national capital remained closed, but several Union Ministries marked the day with e-governance initiatives, launch of new programmes and websites. 
(iii) On his second visit to Varanasi after becoming Prime Minister, Mr. Modi took part in the Swachh Bharat mission and inaugurated development works in the city.

HDFC Bank launches e-payment gateway for Kanpur Nagar Nigam
(i) HDFC Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kanpur Nagar Nigam to implement the payment solution.
(ii) Starting December 26, residents of Kanpur will be able to make their property tax payments online in a quick and convenient manner, using any debit card, credit card or net banking facility.
(iii) The Kanpur Nagar Nigam has achieved a unique distinction by becoming the first in the state to enable electronic payment of property tax.

GIC acquires realty company for Rs 1,400 crore
(i) Singapore's GIC agreed on Tuesday to take controlling interest of the publicly listed Nirlon in a deal that could be valued up to Rs 1,400 crore. 
(ii) This is perhaps the first instance of a sovereign fund gaining control of an Indian company.

Ganguly, Kiran Bedi new ‘Clean India’ ambassadors
(i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday nominated a few more prominent personalities, including former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi and stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma as brand ambassadors for the “Clean India” campaign which he kicked off on Gandhi Jayanti day.
(ii) Mr. Modi appreciated the efforts of citizens and social organisations in joining his cleanliness drive and bringing about noticeable changes across the country.

DRDO conducts maiden test-flight of Panchi
(i) Panchi, the wheeled version of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Nishant, capable of taking off from and landing on small airstrips, had its maiden flight on December 24 from an airfield at Kolar in Karnataka.
(ii) The aim of the flight, which lasted 25 minutes, was “to demonstrate that Panchi can take off and land on its wheels. 
(iii) Panchi was designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) facility at Bengaluru.

Tennis in 2014: Prizes shared but Djokovic and Serena still rule
(i) Grand Slam titles were shared around like slices of pizza in 2014 but for all the welcome variety Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams ended the year still setting the standard.
