Bharat Ratna for Vajpayee, Madan Mohan Malaviya
(i) The President's Office on Wednesday announced the Bharat Ratna award to Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
(ii) The announcement was made on the eve of Mr. Vajpayee's 90th birthday and the 153rd birth anniversary of Pandit Malviya.
(iii) The BJP has been demanding Bharat Ratna for Mr. Vajpayee for a long time; and BJP patriarch L.K. Advani has been at the forefront of seeking the highest civilian honour for the former Prime Minister.

EPFO to launch special drive to cover contract workers
(i) Officials in the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) will focus on increasing coverage of contract workers, especially construction workers, to be allotted Unique Account Numbers (UAN). 
(ii) “The ministry is planning to launch special drives to ensure contract workers, construction workers are included in PF, as law entitles them to. 
(iii) They form a large section of all workers, and do not get the benefits of PF because of the temporary nature of work,” said Gauri Kumar, Secretary, MoLE.

Japan parliament re-elects Abe as prime minister
(i) Japan’s parliament re-elected Shinzo Abe on Wednesday to serve another term as prime minister after his party won a snap election earlier this month.
(ii) Mr. Abe won 328 votes out of the 470 cast by lawmakers in a special session of the lower house on Wednesday.
(iii) Since the ruling Liberal Democrats hold only two lower house seats, two other lawmakers also cast votes for Mr. Abe.

Maruti set for record sales in 2014 at over 11.48 lakh units

(i) Country’ largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India is set for a record sales in 2014 at over 11.48 lakh units driven by growth across segments. 
(ii) The company is awaiting a clarity on the amendment to the Company’s Act before going ahead with the minority shareholders’ voting on its plans to let parent Suzuki Motor Corp own and invest at the upcoming Gujarat plant.
(iii) “We are going to see our highest ever sales in a calendar year in 2014. We are going to touch around 11.48 lakh units during the year,” Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Chairman R.C. Bhargava told reporters.

PSU banks write off over Rs. 1.06 lakh crore in last 5 years
(i) Public sector banks have written off loans worth Rs. 1,06,170 crore in the last five years, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
(ii) “The RBI data reporting system does not collate data on the number of account holder having more than Rs. 1 crore, whose loans were written off,” Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said in written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Centre to have mobile monitoring system for MGNREGA
(i) The Union Ministry of Rural Development is likely to introduce a Mobile Monitoring System for effective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
(ii) The monitoring system will be introduced on a pilot basis to allow real time monitoring of all works, workers attendance and work site measurement. The move is expected to plug leakages in the rural job scheme.

600 CCTV cameras to be installed at bus depots
(i) The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has decided to set up 600 CCTV cameras at 60 depots across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. APSRTC officials, in a release, said on Tuesday that CCTV cameras would be put in place at 27 depots in Hyderabad and Secunderabad and the remaining in Krishna, Guntur, East Godavari and West Godavari districts. 

Modi to visit Varanasi tomorrow for 'Good Governance Day'
(i) To mark the 'Good Governance Day' on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be
in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi.
(ii) Where he will attend a number of programmes on the occasion of the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
(iii) He will visit Assi Ghat to inspect the progress of cleanliness drive launched by him last month, sources said here on Wednesday.
