Sindhushree Khullar named NITI Aayog CEO
(i) The Modi Government on Saturday appointed former Planning Commission Secretary Sindhushree Khullar as the first CEO of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog.
(ii) Ms. Khullar, a 1975 batch UT cadre IAS officer, was appointed Planning Commission’s Secretary in April 2012. 
(iii) She continued to hold the post even after the Modi Government scrapped the Cabinet resolution in August 2014 through which the Planning Commission was set up.

11 crore bank accounts opened under Jan Dhan Yojana: PM Modi
(i) The government has exceeded its target of opening bank accounts before time under its flagship scheme 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' and opened around 11 crore accounts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday.
(ii) "We had to open seven crore bank accounts by Jan 26, but I feel proud in saying that around 11 crore people have opened bank accounts till Jan 10 under the Jan Dhan Yojana," Modi said at a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in Delhi which is likely to hold assembly elections in February.

Union opposes FDI in Railways, threatens indefinite strike
(i) The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) has vehemently opposed the Centre’s proposal for FDI in Railways and threatened to go on indefinite strike in June this year.
(ii) According to NFIR General Secretary M. Raghaviah, there is no need for FDI in Railways.
(iii) “Government’s move to slowly hand over the Railways to foreign hands is like the entry of East India Company, which ruled the country later
(iv) NFIR has offered the Railway Ministry to take loan from the Provident Fund of the Railway employees and repay them in due course for funding certain viable projects

Madhya Pradesh NSUI head Vipin Wankhede resigns
(i) Alleging unfair distribution of tickets by the Congress in the local body elections, National Students Union of India (NSUI) Madhya Pradesh unit's president Vipin Wankhede resigned from his post here today.
(ii) "I have sent my resignation to the NSUI National President Roji John in protest against overlooking interests of the students' wing workers," Wankhede told PTI.


Sirisena's first overseas visit will be to India
(i) Sri Lanka's newly-elected President Maithripala Sirisena will make his first State visit overseas to India.
(ii) Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Mr. Sirisena on Friday to congratulate him on his poll victory.
(iii) 'Mr. Modi invited our President to come to India first. He proposes to go next month," said Rajitha Senaratne, senior politician and spokesman of Mr. Sirisena.

Kerry heads for India to attend Vibrant Gujarat Summit
(i) US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday headed for India to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit during which he will address investors to boost economic ties.
(ii) Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss a broad range of bilateral and global issues, including climate change.
(iii) The three-day Vibrant Gujarat Summit will begin tomorrow in Ahmedabad.

Sugar industry sends SOS to TN government
(i) The sugar industry in Tamil Nadu which is in deep trouble due to mounting stock surplus, unprecedented losses and total exhaustion of bank limits has requested three key relief measures from the state government.
(i) The South Indian Sugar Mills Association (SISMA) has urged the state government to abolish VAT, pay the differential price of Rs.300 per tonne as subsidy to farmers and revise electricity tariff for co-generation power in line with other states’ tariff.


Sharapova warms up for Australian Open by defeating Ivanovic
(i) Seven years after Maria Sharapova won her first — and only — Australian Open in a straight-sets final against Ana Ivanovic, the world No.2 has warmed-up for her latest attempt by claiming her 34th career title at the Brisbane International. 
(ii) The victim: Ivanovic. The score: 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3.
(iii) The Evonne Goolagong Trophy was claimed on Sharapova's third championship point, with a last, netted Ivanovic forehand.
