Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg starts reading programme
(i) The Facebook founder and CEO announced on his page recently that he has vowed to read a book every other week in 2015, with an emphasis on learning about different beliefs, cultures and technologies.
(ii) Mr. Zuckerberg created a page called “A Year of Books” and urged his friends to join him in the project. As of late Sunday afternoon, it had more than 100,000 likes.
(iii) “I’m excited for my reading challenge,” Mr. Zuckerberg wrote.
He Zhenliang, China's 'Mr. Olympics,' dies
(i) He Zhenliang, a former International Olympic Committee vice-president, who was instrumental in Beijing winning the 2008 Olympics, has died. He was 85.
(ii) Known by the nickname “Mr. Olympics” in China.
(iii) He was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1981 and became vice-president in 1989, remaining in the position for four years.
PM describes LED as Prakash Path
(i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the LED bulb as a "Prakash Path" - "way to light," as he launched a scheme for LED bulb distribution under the domestic efficient lighting programme in New Delhi; and a National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting.
(ii) Modi symbolically replaced one bulb in South Block, with an LED bulb. Replacement of all bulbs in South Block with LED bulbs will enable savings of 7,000 units of energy each month.
Centre gives nod to set up Rs 1,500crore underground lab in Tamil Nadu
(i) A recent meeting of the Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave approval to set up the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500crore, according to an official statement.
(ii) The project, considered to be the first biggest basic science experimental project in the country, aims at building a world class underground laboratory primarily to study neutrinos.
Arvind Panagariya named NITI Aayog vice-chairman
(i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday appointed Columbia University Professor Arvind
Panagariya as the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog Vice Chairman.
(ii) Mr. Modi also appointed Economist Bibek Debroy and Former Secretary Defence R&D, V.K. Saraswat, to the Aayog as full-time members.
(iii) Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh were all appointed as ex-officio members to the Aayog, according to an official release.
Krishnamurthy appointed private secretary to defence minister
(i) IAS officer P Krishnamurthy was appointed as private secretary to defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday.
(ii) Krishnamurthy, a 1997 batch IAS officer of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union territories cadre, is presently working as resident commissioner at Goa Sadan and state's finance secretary.
Saina to be nominated for award as a ‘special case’
(i) In a move that could potentially have far-reaching consequences, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has recommended Saina Nehwal for the Padma Bhushan award as a ‘special case’.
The minister asserted, however, that this move should not be treated as a precedent.
(ii) The Sports Ministry claimed that the Badminton Association of India (BAI) had not sent the letter of recommendation until Saturday.
(iii) Since Minister Sonowal was away from the city and there was no working day until Monday, Saina’s case could not have been considered earlier.
