Tatas’ Vistara starts flying
(i) Marking Tatas’ re-entry into the Indian aviation space after over six decades, new airline Vistara on Friday flew its first flight, and said its aim will be to “do it right” without making a big splash.
(ii) Entering at a turbulent time facing the sector, the airline said it would not be “lavish or over-the-top” in the name of being a full service carrier.
(iii) Tatas hold a majority 51 per cent stake in Vistara — a joint venture with Singapore Airlines, which holds the remaining 49 per cent.
11 Nagaland MLAs quit
(i) Nagaland Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang, 11 of his Naga People’s Front (NPF) legislators — two Ministers, four MLAs and five parliamentary secretaries resigned on Thursday, demanding change of leadership.
(ii) The 11 NPF legislators in their resignation letters addressed to the Chief Minister .
(iii) They are quitting from their respective portfolios with immediate effect, as majority of NPF and DAN legislators have elected Kaito Aye as the new leader of NPF Legislature Party.
Karuna re-elected DMK chief, Kanimozhi elevated
(i) Ninety-year-old DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was today unanimously re-elected as president for the 11th time at the party's general council, asserting his unquestioned supremacy in the party.
(ii) The elevation of Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, the DMK chief's daughter, as secretary of the Women's wing, unanimous re-election of Anbazhagan and M K Stalin as general secretary and treasurer respectively also reaffirmed that Karunanidhi continued to call the shots in the party.
Mercedes-Benz to launch 15 products in India
(i) Mercedes-Benz plans to pump in Rs 150 crore for adding a new assembly line for its upcoming CLA compact sedan at the Chakan facility.
(ii) Mercedes-Benz will introduce 15 products in 2015, including products with no predecessors in India.
(iii) The products will be feature rich variants, keeping in line with the company’s strategy of bringing the right products at the right price
Dubai-based philanthropist BS Abdur Rahman dies
(i) BS Abdur Rahman, the well-known Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist who died on January 7 aged 88, is remembered for his philanthropy and monumental work in the field of education.
(ii) He died after a protracted illness at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India.
(iii) The dynamic businessman who came to Dubai in 1974, following in the footsteps of his father who was a pearl trader, was the vice-chairman of ETA Ascon, a diversified group in partnership with Abdullah Al Ghurair.
Britain takes precautionary steps after Paris terror attack
(i) Britain has taken “precautionary” steps to boost security along its border with France, following the terror attack on the office of a magazine in Paris, British Home Secretary, Theresa May, said on Thursday.
(ii) Britain’s international terrorism threat level remained at “severe,” the second highest of all five possible threat levels, which meant that a terrorist attack was “highly likely” and the public should remain vigilant, Ms. May said in a statement, according to a Xinhua report.
Infosys Q3 net up 13% at Rs 3,250 crore
(i) Beating market expectation, country’s second largest software exporter, Infosys, witnessed 13 per cent growth in its net profit at Rs 3,250 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 when compared to the same period last year.
(ii) The revenue of the Bengaluru-based company stood at Rs 13,796 crore registering a growth of around 5.9 per cent as against the same period last year.
Implement 13th amendment: Venkaiah Naidu to new Sri Lankan govt.
(i) The new government elected in Sri Lanka should implement the 13th amendment in “letter and spirit” and the aspirations of the ethnic Tamils there must be met, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said in Chennai on Friday.
(ii) “The Sri Lankan government should implement the 13th amendment (an Indian initiative aimed at giving more powers to provinces) in their Constitution in letter and spirit. The aspirations of the ethnic Tamils should be met.
